It is situated in western Syria, bordering Turkey. Its reported area varies in different sources from 2,297 km²〔http://www.citypopulation.de/Syria.html〕 to 2,437 km².〔http://www.statoids.com/usy.html〕 The Governorate has a population of 991,000 (2010 estimate). More than 50% of the province (and more than 70% of the capital Latakia) is Sunni, with a significant Alawite minority. == History == The governorate was historically part of the Alawite State, which existed from 1920–1936. The city of Latakia was the capital of the state.
